Advertising poster for “JOB” cigarette paper produced by Joseph Bardou Company. Another outstanding work of the author. Even in its time, the poster became so popular that it was sold as a work of art.
And although in the 1890s it was still considered risky for women to smoke in public places, artist portrays a confident woman who calmly enjoys a smoke. The fashion for smoking among women came only in the 1920s.
Smoking tobacco rolled into paper cigarettes came to Europe after the Crimean War of 1853-1856. French and British soldiers adopted this habit from the Turks, who wrapped tobacco in scraps of old newspapers. Until then, everyone smoked a pipe or cigars wrapped in tobacco leaves.
