Description

Ukimido is a small prayer pavilion on the water, part of the Mangetsu-ji temple, beside Lake Biwa.

A woman strolls along the shore beneath a colorful umbrella as a drizzling rain falls from the sky. Graceful tree branches with lush green foliage frame the scene overhead, and the pillars of the temple are nicely reflected in the water below.

Artist — Takeji Asano.

He worked in both the shin-hanga and sosaku hanga Japanese woodblock print traditions. Takeji Asano studied Western and Japanese painting, and became interested in woodblock prints after taking a class with Hiratsuka Un’ichi, one of the founders of the sosaku hanga or creative print movement.
